Uses of Topamax

Topamax is also known by the generic name Topiramate

USES:
Topiramate is used alone or with other medications to prevent and control seizures (epilepsy). This medication is also used to prevent migraine headaches and decrease how often you get them. Topiramate will not treat a migraine headache once it occurs. If you get a migraine headache, treat it as directed by your doctor (such as by taking pain medication, lying down in a dark room).

Topiramate is known as an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic drug.

Uses of Depakote

Depakote is also known by the generic name Divalproex USES: This medication is used to treat seizure disorders, certain psychiatric conditions (manic phase of bipolar disorder), and to prevent migraine headaches. It works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain.

When combined Topamax and Depakote have the following interaction of Moderate seriousness: Concurrent use of valproic acid or its derivatives and topiramate may increase the risk of hyperammonemia with or without encephalopathy. Hyperammonemic encephalopathy may present as changes in state of consciousness and/or cognitive function with lethargy and vomiting. Concurrent use has also resulted in hypothermia.
