How It Works

7 Steps to Your Medication Safety

1. Enter or Import Meds

  • Enter your medications directly - just start typing then choose from the list.
  • Import your Medications from one of our partner applications such as Microsoft HealthVault
  • Medications include
    • Prescriptions - Drugs including Immunizations and Vaccinations
    • Over the Counter - Pain and cold pills
    • Medicinal Herbs - such as Gingko
    • Supplements - Vitamins and Minerals
2. Search Side Effects
  • Note any symptoms you may be having and search for them in the Side Effects section.
  • Review the Combined Risk, labeled “All”, for those of your symptoms in the search results. Combined Risk tells you the likelihood that a symptom may actually be a side effects from your medications and not a primary condition.
3. Check Interactions
  • Review the severity of the interactions and talk to your doctor if they are of Serious or Moderate severity
  • Read the Interactions descriptions to see if they describe your symptoms
4. Evaluate Contraindications
  • Meds that should be used carefully or not at all, given your age, sex, or conditions are considered Contraindicated
  • Review the risk level of the contraindications and talk to your doctor about the advisories
  • Contraindications include:
    • Meds - Conditions Contraindications
    • Meds - Conditions Precautions and Warnings
  • You must be signed in and working with a Patient Med Cabinet to see Contraindications Risks.
5. Identify Problem Meds
  • Note which meds:
    • Contribute to each symptom you searched for in Side Effects and which of those meds pose the highest risk.
    • Participate in Interactions, particularly of Serious and Moderate severity
    • Are contraindicated for you
6. Simulate the Impact of an Alternates
  • Compare the results of replacing a medication with the original risks by using a medication Edit link and selecting a Simulate Based on option
  • Talk to your Doctor
    • Share what you leaned
    • See if your doctor agrees that the problem you are having might be a side effect and that the alternate option is a good one in your doctor's opinion
