*150,000 of these deaths are avoidable
These numbers are astounding, indicating that 1 in 10 deaths in the US are caused by our legally prescribed drugs. While the crisis receives frequent attention in the media, e.g., the New York Times, the healthcare industry has yet to effectively address it.

- Over 2.5 million serious (life threatening) Adverse Drug Side Effects per year.
- Adverse Drug Side Effects cause 1 out of 5 injuries or deaths for hospital patients.
- Mean length of stay, cost, and mortality for hospitalized Adverse Drug Effect patients are DOUBLE that for control patients who are hospitalized but do not have any Adverse Drug Side Effects.
- Adverse Drug Effects cause 116 million extra physician visits, 77 million extra prescriptions, 17 million emergency department visits, 8 million hospitalizations and 3 million long-term admissions.
The Aging Population Fuels the Crisis
The US population is aging as boomers become seniors. This compounds the problem of Adverse Drug Side Effects as they increase exponentially with 4 or more medications. Indeed, 54% of nursing home patients are judged to have one or more inappropriate prescriptions. This plus the cadre of pharmaceuticals on the market - 22,000 drugs and growing - is making for a community with a loud voice demanding a solution.
